Optimizing Growth Conditions for Pachyrhizus erosus (Jicama)

At the Agricultural Genomics Institute, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (Shenzhen), our BPC800H plant growth chamber was utilized to cultivate Pachyrhizus erosus (commonly known as jicama or yam bean), a leguminous root vegetable valued for its nutritional and research significance.

This species thrives in warm, sunny environments, with an ideal temperature range of 20–30°C. The tuberous roots develop best at 20–25°C, while flowering and seed formation require sustained high temperatures. Seed maturation typically takes 7–8 months, necessitating highly stable and controllable conditions throughout the plant’s life cycle.

To simulate these optimal conditions, a dual-layer quad-spectrum LED lighting system was configured with white, red, blue, and infrared light. The BPC800H chamber’s precise environmental regulation and customizable light spectrum provided optimal support for root enlargement and flowering processes, helping researchers at the Institute achieve their cultivation goals with efficiency and reliability.
