Cultivation of Arabidopsis thaliana Under Controlled Conditions

At the Institute of Genetics and Developmental Biology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Prof. Xiangdong Fu’s team utilized the BPC600H plant growth chamber to cultivate Arabidopsis thaliana, a model organism widely used in plant molecular biology.

This cruciferous species is sensitive to environmental conditions such as temperature, humidity, and photoperiod. Among its common ecotypes, ideal growth occurs between 16–25°C, with 22–23°C being optimal. Humidity levels from 25% to 75% support normal development, while excessive humidity (>90%) can result in infertility. Photoperiod also plays a key role: short-day conditions (<12 hours) favor vegetative growth, whereas long-day conditions (>12 hours) promote reproductive transition.

To closely mimic these conditions, the BPC600H chamber was set to 22°C with 75% humidity and equipped with a 582616 LED spectrum. The photoperiod was programmed for 16 hours of light and 8 hours of darkness, with the light intensity calibrated to approximately 70 μmol/m²·s at the soil surface. Intermittent ventilation cycles (60s off / 5s on) ensured proper air exchange without disrupting internal stability.
